Shenzhen Middle School Choir
![]() Established in 1989, Shenzhen Middle School Choir (SZMSC) quickly attained the honor of being named “Outstanding Choir” at the national level in 1993. Since 1997 the choir has been under the leadership of conductor Mrs. Mei Liu who has led SZMSC to grow into an outstanding and renowned choir widely recognized by international experts and judges in choral music. The choir encouraged the members to explore and develop their musical talents, And now the choir has developed a versatile repertoire, including western and traditional Chinese music, foreign music and contemporary music. SZMSC has taken numerous championships and gold medals in both international and local choral competitions and is the only choir in Shenzhen to win first place medals for seven consecutive times. In 2000, SZMSC won first place at China Children’s Choir Festival and selected again as an “Outstanding Choir” at the national level. In 2001, the choir won Gold medal at 12th Australian International Music Festival. In 2002, the choir attained 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the 2nd World Choir Games(a gold medal in the category of Youth choirs of equal voices, a gold medal in the category of Folklore a-cappella, and a silver medal in the category of Folklore with instrumental companiment). In 2004 SZMSC took first place in the 1st National Primary and Secondary Schools’s Art Show Vocal Competition. In July 2004, Germany hosted the 3rd World Choir Games where SZMSC achieved 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal and was awarded the world champion in the category of Female Vocal Ensembles (a gold medal in the category of Children’s Choirs, a gold medal in the category of Female Vocal Ensembles, a gold medal in the category of Folklore a cappella, a silver medal in the category of Popular Choir Music). In July 2006, the choir won the champion in several categories and the Best Choir in Greater China in 2006 Hong Kong International Youth & Children Choir Festival. In August 2006, the choir got the highest prize in the China National Children Choir Festival. Most recently in 2007 SZMSC also took first place in the 2nd National Primary and Secondary Schools’s Art Show Vocal Competition for the second time. Not only does the choir strive for excellence in artistic dimensions, SZMSC also focuses on cultivating its members overall qualities, abilities, and morality, so as to develop its members into all-round individuals. In recent years, members of SZMSC respectively have been accepted by China’s prestigious universities, such as Tsinghua University, Beijing University, Nankai University, China Agriculture University, Huazhong Science and Technology University, Zhongshan University, and some famous conservatories of Music, such as China Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music. By enhancing art quality, the comprehensive qualities of the students are also tangibly promoted. Brief introduction of the Conductor of SZMSC After graduating from Xinghai Conservatory of Music in 1997, Mei Liu reorganized SZMSC. Under her conscientious guidance and skilled leadership, SZMSC has taken home many gold and first place medals in both international and national choral competitions. Mei Liu has won awards of her own, and has been recognized for several consecutive years as the Outstanding Conductor at city level and national level competitions and has been awarded many times by the Shenzhen Government. In 2002, she won the "CONDUCTOR'S PRIZE" at 2nd World Choir Games.
